7 tips to dress your windows for success
Thank you to Pretty Woman Bridal (2023 Maroondah Business Excellence Awards Finalist) and Croydon Main Street Traders Association for sharing their 7 tips for creating a show-stopping Christmas display that’ll have shoppers flocking to your store.
1.Set the Scene with a Story
- Theme It Up: Create a mini-story like “Santa’s Maroondah Workshop” or “Winter in Maroondah” with snow, reindeer, and a few Maroondah signs for that local charm.
- Layer it Like a Masterpiece: Position larger items in the back, adding smaller treasures upfront for a 3D look. Kids (and adults) will love peeking in to find new surprises each time.
2. Light the Night
- Twinkling Magic: Add battery-operated fairy lights or LED candles to make your display glow all evening. And if you can, create a mini “snowfall” with a projector to make the scene feel extra magical!
- Add Some Movement: A little spinning decoration or flowing ribbon gives the display life, keeping those little eyes glued to your window.
3. Highlight a Showstopper
- Star of the Window: Choose one big, attention-grabbing piece, like a giant bauble, sparkly Christmas tree, or a Maroondah landmark dressed up for the holidays. Make it stand out to anchor your theme.
- Hang a Few Elements: Suspend ornaments, candy canes, or “flying” reindeer to add height and use the full window space.
4. Mix Colors and Contrast
- Color that Pops: Stick with a festive palette of red, green, and gold—they’ll draw the eye even on Maroondah’s dreariest day.
- Local Snowfall: We may not get a white Christmas, but a few white snowflakes or snowballs can make your display feel wintry. Pair with darker backgrounds for a sharp, festive contrast.
5. Engage the Senses with Scent and Sound
- Holiday Scents: Place pine or cinnamon sachets near the door for a whiff of Christmas whenever someone walks by - it’s like an aromatic invitation!
- Seasonal Tunes: Play gentle holiday music inside to create a cozy, inviting vibe (bonus if you can get the kids dancing on the street!).
6. Make It Interactive for Kids
- Selfie Station Alert! Add a “Maroondah Elfie Spot” where kids can take a photo with the display, or let them write their name on a “Nice List” chalkboard to get into the holiday spirit.
- Countdown to Christmas: A daily countdown sign or “What’s New Today?” message keeps locals coming back for a fresh look each day.
7. Keep it Fresh
- Weekly Sprinkle of Fun: Add a new piece or swap out small items weekly - maybe a new snowman or Santa’s letter. This will keep your window looking fresh, so people keep noticing.
- Gift Inspiration Signs: Label a few items with “Perfect for Stocking Fillers” or “Maroondah’s Most Loved Gifts” to guide those last-minute shoppers.
Have fun and happy decorating!
